Celeriac au gratin – How to cook a Celeriac (celery root)

Brenda left a celeriac on the boat today. I have never seen one before so I do what I am starting to do for all of these occasions and post a plea for help on Facebook together with a photograph of this alien-looking vegetable.

My beautiful sister-in-law Diana graciously responds with the following advice.

Peel off the hard outer edges, and slice the inside fairly thinly. Place in baking dish with layers of sautéed onion between each layer. Then you make a cheese sauce, pour over top and bake in moderate oven.

Very delicious!
